Directed by Juan Agustín Márquez, the Emmy award winning film 100,000 documents a growing problem on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico – stray dogs. These abandoned feral dogs, also known as “satos” in Puerto Rico, are often seen roaming the streets and beaches of Puerto Rico and are growing in number. The 100,000 documentary offers eye opening views of the problem, as well as the stories of volunteers making an effort to alleviate the issue without receiving much support from the government.

After the film aired in 2010, director Juan Márquez collaborated with Purina of Puerto Rico and created a 20 school film tour. Students watched the educational documentary about this growing problem and made a pledge to help abused animals. Check out footage of the film tour in Puerto Rico below!

There are many ways we can stop the overpopulation and abuse of animals in Puerto Rico. “We have to keep promoting spaying and neutering in Puerto Rico. We have to break down the ‘machismo’ barrier that has blocked this concept in the minds of so many. Education is key at an early age.” says director Juan Marquez.

• Save A Sato – Takes in homeless animals, provides basic care including vaccination shots and spay/neuter services, rehoming services and more.
• The Sato Project – Rescue, rehabilitate and adopt abandoned dogs. They have partnered with Pets Alive in NY and you can also volunteer to be an escort to take an animal with you from Puerto Rico to New York so they can have a chance to be adopted in the states.
• Island Dog Inc – Dedicated to building animal friendly communities in Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra. Rescue, rehabilitate abused and adoptable animals.
• Second Chance Animal Rescue – Rescue, rehabilitate, and locate forever homes for abandoned and neglected dogs. Provides each rescue with food, shelter, medical care and attention. Due to extreme suffering on the streets, many go on to live out their lives as a part of their sanctuary family and receive long term care.

Jennifer, Marc and Jamie are traveling to 21 Latin American countries, including Puerto Rico (of course), Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela to find talented individuals to represent their country here in the states.

And with producer and American Idol creator Simon Fuller‘s XIX Entertainment on board for the show, we will be expecting nothing less but great talent and entertainment for this new reality show. Lets just hope Marc and Jennifer can set their situation aside to make this show come to life!

Latin music and art is deep and enriched with culture and history, I can’t wait to see the experiences captured in each country and the talent brought back to the US.

Congratulations to Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto who got his revenge in a rematch fight against Antonio Margarito last night in Madison Square Garden, New York for the WBA Super World Light Middleweight title. Cotto was the clear winner after each round and it became apparent to the crowd and ringside doctor that Margarito’s right eye was closed in the 7th round. After non-stop pummeling compliments of Miguel Cotto in the 9th round, Dr. Barry Jordan stopped the fight and Cotto was declared the winner by TKO.

The victory brings much needed vindication for Cotto and his camp after his loss to Margarito in 2008. The match in 2008 eventually became questioned after Margarito was caught with plaster-like substances in his hand wraps prior to his bout against Shane Mosley in 2009. Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, observed a pasty white substance in Margarito’s handwraps and insisted that it be checked and an inspector called for the hands to be rewrapped and the substance, likened to cement, was discovered. After losing by TKO to Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito was to be suspended for at least a year for the illegal tampering of handwraps. Many of Margarito’s previous victories were then questioned as it was not known if he had the cement-like substance in his wraps in other fights as well.

Antonio Margarito returned to the ring in 2010, and the long awaited rematch against Miguel Cotto became a reality after Margarito finally got licensed to fight in New York. As the fight date grew close HBO’s 24-7 Cotto vs Margarito showed what was going on as both fighters were training for the bout and what their mindset was. In the second episode of the HBO series, Cotto stated “I don’t feel any respect for him you know. I’m going to take advantage of his eye, like he took advantage of the plaster” while Margarito exclaimed “F- Cotto. If he thinks I had the plaster. It will hurt like I was using plaster, and he will know it.”

Whether or not Antonio Margarito had plaster in their 2008 match, he did not have the plaster last night and it was clear who the winner was.

Hey everyone! Sorry for the late heads up but I have just received information about the Festival Del Descubrimiento De America, put together by the California Puerto Rican Parade & Festival! Here’s all the information you need to know…

This past weekend I was made aware of a social motorcycle group in Southern California known as Harlistas Boricua. Founded in August 2010 and the first of its kind in California, Harlistas Boricua was started by a group of Puerto Ricans who ride Harley Davidson motorcycles to various places in California and share our Puerto Rican culture with whomever they come across in the process. They ride most weekends and during their events they make it a point to ride to different Puerto Rican establishments or restaurants. Aside from the love of riding, the club was created to celebrate and introduce the culture, history and music of Puerto Rico with everyone. The brothers of Harlistas Boricua are from different walks of life. Some are business men, active duty servicemen, law enforcement and retirees. This group is not an outlaw-type of motorcycle club and is family oriented and they welcome anyone, even those of non Puerto Rican descent, to join them!

Harlistas Boricua’s 1 year anniversary is coming up on Saturday, August 20th and they will be riding to Mofongos in North Hollywood followed by a run up Pacific Coast Highway to the Ventura county line. Of course EVERYONE is invited to help them celebrate this history in the making!
