Puerto Rican a capella singing group Nota earned a $100,000 prize plus a Sony recording contract after winning the NBC singing competition “The Sing Off”. They will be meeting with Sony Executives early this year to discuss plans for their upcoming album.

Hard to believe that this talented group, who have been singing together on and off for 15 years, would not have made it to auditions if it weren’t for a bit of luck.

Two years ago Johnny Figueroa, 33, moved to Los Angeles with his wife Merari to focus on research work after getting his doctorate in biophysics. He was the first one in the group to hear about auditions for the “Sing-Off” competition.

He started calling friends back home in Puerto Rico to get the group together. Jose Rodriguez, 37, desperately wanted to be a part of it but his wife Melinda was in the hospital, severely ill with in H1N1 virus. Fortunately her health condition improved and although she was still sick, she supported Jose’s decision to audition for the competition.

The H1N1 virus struck another family member of the singing group as well: Edgar Rios, 34, a pharmaceutical representative, was also in the hospital visiting his 4 year old daughter Edanice who also had the H1N1 virus. Fortunately, Edanice recovered before Edgar left for the audition.

David Pinto, 25, works in a sound studio for Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee. When told about the audition he was not sure if he could afford the cost of flying to Los Angeles for the audition. This problem was solved when Daddy Yankee offered to pay for the expenses.

Other members of the group are Ludwig Henderson, 31, and Juan Eli Diaz, 30.
