“Macho: The Hector Camacho Story”, a Documentary on Macho’s Battles Inside and Outside the Ring

Showtime Sports Documentary films will feature a work of Eric Drath, “Macho: The Hector Camacho Story”, a documentary of the rise, fall, and untimely death of one of boxing’s most unforgettable champions.

The 1980s gave way to the fame and stardom of the most talented and powerful boxers in the scene. There’s Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Julio César Chávez, and Thomas Hearns to name a few. But in the middle of the decade, the name Hector “Macho” Camacho emerged and made its unforgettable mark in the history of professional boxing.

Hector Camacho is a professional boxer from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. They moved to Spanish Harlem in New York City when his parents separated when he was three,. Growing up in the place, Camacho was always in fights that put him in jail when he was fifteen. But the life he was leading changed when he learned karate and boxing which showed his great potential in sports.

Ever since he started his career in boxing, Camacho can be distinguished from other boxers with his charisma and showmanship in every fight. He is ruthless with his dynamic speed and power that gave him a series of knockouts. With his overall record, he only recorded 3 draws and 6 losses from 88 fights.

Drath tells perfectly how Macho uses his style in every opponent, especially during the fight with Rosario. Macho has always been an incredible fighter that no one can take lightly.

“He was definitely a lucky guy in the sense that he was born with all the talent in the world,” Drath said. “He was a natural showman and was blessed with that gene for showmanship that so few fighters ever have. You had Muhammad Ali, of course. Sugar Ray Leonard to an extent. Tyson had that ability that people just marveled at.

“Camacho had this authenticity. He was different and he just didn’t care. Who he was inside of the ring was who he was outside of the ring. That charm and charisma helped him in the beginning as people may be enabled him a little more than they might have another person who committed the crimes he did. But his talent saved his butt, too. He had that wonderful combination of talent and charisma and showmanship made him just a remarkable fighter and a remarkable story.”

But the documentary “Macho: The Hector Camacho Story” is not just about his prominence in the ring, but also a story of his life’s battles in addiction, facing his demons, and the tragedy that led to his death.

He ran into different troubles and a shooting incident in 2012 ended his life, together with his friend during the incident. Up to this date, the case remains unsolved, and watching the documentary will help everyone understand who and why the tragedy happened to boxer Hector Camacho.

The sports documentary will debut this Friday night, December 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.
