“The Prom” star and theater dancer and singer Arianna DeBose shares her experience in joining the cast of the film adaptation of The Prom musical.

Arianna DeBose is an Afro-Latina who started her stardom in the world of music and theater. She made her breakthrough when she joined the TV Series  So You Think You Can Dance in 2019. She also made an appearance in shows like Bring It On, Motown, Hamilton, A Bronx Tale The Musical, and a Tony-nominated turn in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical

In 2019, Arianna DeBose displayed her talent as an actress on screen and in a musical production when she starred as Alyssa Greene on Netflix’s “The Prom”. She played as the love interest of Emma Nolan, a character portrayed by Jo Ellen Pellman.

Film adaptation “The Prom” celebrates Culture and Diversity

The Prom is about a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars who shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend. A musical show on the celebration of love, respect despite differences and being who you are. Something the Afro-Latina truly relates to.

Arianna DeBose couldn’t believe the amazing experience of filming the show with some of the great stars like The Devil Wears Prada’s Merryl Streep and actress, producer, and director Kerry Washington. Other names who also joined the cast are James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, and Keegan-Michael Key.

For the Puerto Rican star, joining the show and being part of its family is the most satisfying feeling. “The fact that we are all now a Prom family, and we all get to represent, it’s really special, especially in a time when the Broadway lights are dark,” she said.

To be able to represent diversity, especially her cultural identity is what matters most to Arianna DeBose. “It’s about being your most authentic self and letting you shine,” she said. “It’s my entire existence. My entire career has been people trying to put me in boxes. I believe I don’t have to justify our identity. We are who we are.”

The Prom film adaptation is from the initiative of Ryan Murphy’s advocacy for more inclusivity in Hollywood. The film was released in limited theaters last Dec.4 prior to its release digitally on Netflix this Dec.11, 2020.
