It’s certainly not the first time long-established Boricua musician Ani Cordero targets government malfeasance with pointed lyricism, but her latest single, “Pan Pan (Sin Mantequilla),” takes an especially clever – and catchy – route to the protest song bull’s-eye.

Fusing beats by French-Chilean producer Pablo San Martin with backing sax, congas, keys, and vocals from Puerto Rican act Émina, “Pan Pan (Sin Mantequilla)” melds Afro-Caribbean rhythms with electronic elements, all the while punctuating that backdrop with the repeated back-and-forth of a helium-high “sin mantequilla! sin mantequilla!” coupled with the lower-octave “pan pan.”
