“Miss Eco Angel” Krystal Badillo shines as she placed herself in the Top 8 of Miss Earth 2020. The 25-year-old nurse proved the world of her wit and charm as she represented Puerto Rico for this year’s Miss Earth pageant.

Miss Earth 2020 coronation was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. From the meet and greet to the coronation night on November 29, 2020. James Deakin from the Philippines hosted the coronation night with FOXlife and TV5 which aired the show.

84 candidates from 4 continental groups of Asia & Oceania, Africa, Americas, and Europe competed to win the prestigious crown. Among the 84 countries, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, and Syria have joined the beauty pageant for the first time. 

The preliminary activities before the coronation night are the Long Gown competition, Sports Wear competition, and Beach Wear competition. However, Creative, Dance, and Singing are the categories for the Talent competition. The preliminary judging categories of the event are Environmental Awareness, Beauty of Face, and Fitness.

In the evening gown competition in the Americas group, Miss Earth Puerto Rico won the silver award.

Aside from being a nurse and model, Krystal Badillo is also an advocate of change for the betterment of the planet. She believes social media can create a great impact in raising awareness about climate change and the importance of ecotourism.

This year, Miss Puerto Rico aimed to have a back-to-back win for the title. Last 2019, Nellys Pimentel won the crown as the first ever Puerto Rican and Caribbean woman to have the title of Miss Earth.

This gave Krystal Badillo high hopes as she reached the Finals and became part of the Top 8 finalists. But it was Lindsey Coffey of the USA who was crowned as the new Miss Earth titleholder. Other candidates who have won are Stephany Zreik of Venezuela as Miss Earth – Air 2020, Roxanne Allison Baeyens from the Philippines as Miss Earth – Water 2020, and  Michala Rubinstein of Denmark as Miss Earth – Fire 2020.

The judges of the event are the President of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Hassan Eltigani Malik. Joined with Natalia Barulich, an International DJ, model, and singer, Patricia Zavala – Latin American singer and TV host,  Violinist Iskandar Widjaja, Restaurateur, Environmentalist, Founder, & CEO of Indochine Group Michael Ma.

Beauty queens who also joined the judging panel are Former Miss Asia 1979 1st runner-up & Executive Vice President, Carousel Productions; and Jewel Lobaton who is the former Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1998 and CEO, Founder, & Owner of Jewel Beauty Strong.

Even though Badillo didn’t take home the crown, she’s still a Puerto Rican pride, along with others who represented the country in the past years. She is now the 3rd Puerto Rico representative who made classified in the finals.
